Wet Belt Engines Explained: Why GBI Cars Avoids Certain Ford EcoBoost and 1.2 PureTech Cars

At GBI Cars, our aim is simple: we want our customers to enjoy reliable, hassle-free motoring.

That means we are careful about the cars we buy, prepare and sell. Sometimes, that also means choosing not to stock certain engines, even if the car itself looks attractive, has good mileage or is popular with buyers.
One engine design we are particularly cautious about is the wet belt engine, especially earlier versions of the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost and the PSA/Stellantis 1.2 PureTech engine used in many Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Vauxhall models.

Not every one of these engines will fail. Some have covered high mileages with careful servicing. However, the potential consequences of wet belt deterioration can be extremely expensive, and we do not believe that risk is fair to pass on to our customers.

What is a wet belt engine?

Most drivers have heard of a timing belt or cam belt. Its job is to keep the engine’s internal parts moving in perfect time. It synchronises the crankshaft and camshafts so that the pistons and valves move correctly.
Traditionally, many timing belts were dry belts. They ran outside the engine’s oil system, usually behind a plastic timing cover.
A wet belt, also known as a belt-in-oil, is different. It runs inside the engine, submerged in or exposed to engine oil. Gates describes the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost as using a wet timing drive system, meaning the belt operates within an oil environment. Gates also says it is important to keep up with the manufacturer service intervals and use the correct specified oil and oil filter on belt-in-oil systems.

The idea behind wet belts was to reduce friction, reduce noise and improve efficiency. In theory, that sounds clever. In real-world used car ownership, however, the design can become very sensitive to oil quality, service history and age.

Why is being submerged in oil a problem?

Engine oil gets hot. It also changes condition over time.
Castrol explains that oil viscosity is measured in relation to cold start-up and normal engine operating temperatures, and that engine oil thins as it heats up.
Once a car is fully warm, the wet belt is operating in hot engine oil. The exact temperature will vary depending on the car, driving style, outside temperature and engine load, but it is fair to say the belt is working in a harsh environment.

The belt is exposed to:
• Hot oil
• Repeated heating and cooling cycles
• Oil contamination
• Fuel dilution
• Combustion by-products
• Incorrect oil if the wrong specification has been used
• Long service intervals
• Mechanical stress from constantly rotating around pulleys

This is why servicing is so important. With a wet belt engine, an oil change is not just an oil change. The correct oil helps protect the belt as well as the engine.

What happens when a wet belt starts to fail?

When a wet belt deteriorates, the problem is not always immediate belt snapping.
Often, the belt starts to break down gradually. Small particles of rubber and belt material can come away and enter the engine oil. Those particles can then collect in the sump and around the oil pickup strainer.

The oil pickup strainer is the part that allows the oil pump to draw oil from the sump and circulate it around the engine. If that strainer becomes restricted, the engine may still have oil in it, but the oil cannot move around the engine properly.
That is the key point: Having oil in the engine is not the same as having good oil pressure.
If oil pressure drops, the engine can suffer serious internal damage. Bearings, camshafts, turbochargers and other moving parts rely on constant oil flow. Without it, damage can happen quickly.

Ford 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt issues

The Ford 1.0 EcoBoost is a very popular engine. It has been used in cars such as the Ford Fiesta, Focus, EcoSport and others.
The problem with earlier wet belt versions is that the belt can degrade. On some applications, there is also an oil pump drive belt. If belt material breaks down, or if the oil pump belt loses teeth, the engine can lose oil pressure.

Ford’s US recall documents for certain 1.0-litre Focus and EcoSport vehicles state that the oil pump drive belt material may degrade and lose teeth, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure. Ford’s safety recall wording also states that loss of oil pressure can lead to engine damage and/or seizure, as well as loss of motive power.

The usual failure route is:
1. The wet belt or oil pump belt starts to deteriorate.
2. Rubber particles enter the oil.
3. Debris collects in the sump or oil pickup.
4. Oil flow becomes restricted.
5. The engine suffers low oil pressure.
6. Internal components are starved of lubrication.
7. The engine can suffer serious damage or complete failure.
For a used car buyer, this is a big concern. The car may look tidy, drive well on a test drive and have no warning lights. But if the wet belt condition is unknown, there can be a significant hidden risk.

Has Ford improved the 1.0 EcoBoost?
Yes, Ford did redesign later versions of the 1.0 EcoBoost engine.
Ford’s own technical information for the Fiesta 1.0L Fox MHEV service engine states that the camshafts are driven by a timing chain, not a belt, for more robustness.
That is an important improvement. It means the newer mild-hybrid version moved away from the earlier wet cam belt arrangement, which was one of the main concerns on older 1.0 EcoBoost engines.

However, buyers should still be careful. It is better not to assume that every car registered after a certain year is automatically fine. Model years, build dates, engine versions and specifications can overlap, so registration year alone does not always tell the full story.
Our advice is simple: check the exact engine fitted to the car, not just the age of the vehicle.
Later Ford 1.0 EcoBoost MHEV engines with the timing-chain camshaft drive are a significant improvement over the earlier wet belt design, but buyers should still verify the exact engine specification before purchasing.

At GBI Cars, this is exactly why we check vehicles carefully before deciding whether they are suitable for retail. We would rather be cautious at the buying stage than sell a car that could cause a customer expensive problems later on.

PSA/Stellantis 1.2 PureTech wet belt issues

The other engine we are cautious about is the 1.2 PureTech.
This engine has been used across many Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Vauxhall models. It is often found in cars such as the Peugeot 208, Peugeot 2008, Peugeot 308, Citroën C3, Citroën C4, Vauxhall Corsa, Vauxhall Crossland, Vauxhall Mokka and others.

Again, not every engine fails. But the issue is serious enough that Stellantis brands have introduced customer support and extended coverage for certain previous-generation PureTech engines.
Peugeot states that support may apply to repairs concerning an oil pressure issue resulting from premature degradation of the timing belt and/or excessive oil consumption. Peugeot also states that extended coverage was implemented for previous generations of PureTech 1.0 and 1.2 engines, covering costs up to 10 years or 112,000 miles under certain conditions.
Vauxhall gives similar wording, referring to specific generations of PureTech 1.0 and 1.2 engines and oil pressure issues resulting from premature timing belt degradation.
That is a very important point. This is not just a rumour from forums or social media. The manufacturer group has publicly acknowledged support relating to premature timing belt degradation on previous-generation PureTech engines.

What happens on the 1.2 PureTech?

On affected 1.2 PureTech engines, the wet belt can deteriorate. In some cases, the belt can change condition, crack, delaminate, shed material, become misshapen or fail.
There are two main risks.

The first is oil starvation. Belt debris can enter the oil system and restrict oil flow. If oil pressure drops, the engine and turbocharger can suffer damage.
The second is timing failure. If the belt loses teeth or snaps, the engine timing can be lost. That can cause the engine to stop and may lead to major internal damage.
There has also been a safety recall issue on some Peugeot models where the brake vacuum pump could be affected by material detaching from the timing belt. The UK vehicle recall record for the Peugeot 308 V2 refers to the brake vacuum pump being affected by material detaching from the timing belt.
For a customer who just wants a reliable used car, this is exactly the type of risk we prefer to avoid.

Why we do not stock these cars

At GBI Cars, we do not want to sell a car and then have a customer face an expensive engine problem later.
Some wet belt cars may be perfectly fine. Some may have had the belt replaced. Some may have been serviced correctly from new. But as a used car dealer, we have to think about the customer’s ownership experience after they drive away.

The difficulty is that wet belt issues are not always obvious during a normal appraisal or test drive. Unless the belt has been inspected properly, and unless the service history is complete and correct, there can be uncertainty.
That is why we have made a commercial decision not to stock cars fitted with the earlier Ford 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt setup or affected previous-generation 1.2 PureTech wet belt engines.
We would rather lose out on buying a car than sell something we are not completely confident in.

Our approach to used cars
When we buy stock, we are not just looking for cars that look good in photos. We are looking for cars that we believe will give customers the best chance of reliable, straightforward ownership.
That means we consider:
• Engine reputation
• Known common faults
• Service history
• MOT history
• Mileage
• Age
• Previous ownership
• Overall condition
• Repair costs if something goes wrong
• Whether we would be happy for our own family to drive it
Wet belt engines are a good example of why the cheapest used car is not always the best used car.
A car can look like good value at first, but if it carries a known risk of expensive engine repairs, it may not be the smart choice long term.

What should buyers check?
If you are looking at a car with a wet belt engine, ask these questions before buying:
1. Does this exact engine use a wet belt?
2. Has the wet belt been inspected?
3. Has the wet belt been replaced?
4. Is there proof, not just a verbal claim?
5. Has the correct manufacturer-approved oil been used?
6. Is the service history complete?
7. Are there any oil pressure warnings?
8. Has the sump or oil pickup been checked for debris?
9. Is the car covered by any manufacturer support programme?
10. Are there better alternatives available for similar money?
If the seller cannot answer these questions properly, be cautious.

Final thoughts
Wet belt engines were designed to improve efficiency, reduce friction and make engines quieter. On paper, the idea makes sense.
In practice, certain wet belt engines have created serious concerns for used car buyers, especially earlier Ford 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt engines and previous-generation PSA/Stellantis 1.2 PureTech engines.

Not every wet belt engine will fail. But when the potential failure can mean oil starvation, low oil pressure, timing failure or complete engine damage, we would rather recommend a different car.
